WEEKEND SUMMARY 6/5/20
Our weekly weekend news summary, news of the past week, and news ahead.
From FIPPOA this recent update:
“Sayville Ferry Service reports that it has been able to achieve its goal of less than 50% occupancy on all ferries. Please note that SFS is seeing heavier ridership on the Thursday and Friday ferries. For now, the ferry schedule will remain the same, but SFS will be discontinuing the triangles on Thursdays and Fridays and running ferries directly to the Pines. SFS reports that riders have been excellent in terms of cooperating with the requirement of wearing masks or face coverings.
Starting this weekend and over the weekend, you will start to see some small changes as we take bigger and bigger steps towards returning to normalcy. Governor Cuomo has granted requests from many elected officials and businesses to expedite the opening of restaurants for outdoor dining. That service can begin in Suffolk County as early as Wednesday, June 8th. In the meantime, the Canteen is now open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the Blue Whale is now open for drinks (both are take-out only; masks are required). Keep checking for updates on Facebook at facebook.com/ThePinesFireIsland .”
And this additional Sayville Ferry information. There is a video from Sayville Ferry President Ken Stein on a new website worth watching. A number of Grove businesses have banded together not only to promote Grove tourism but to advocate for a longer season this year.
See their video and tour the site as well:
From FIPPOA: “In other ways, you will also see a return to regular summer activity. Our volleyball nets are up on the beach. Residents are doing a great job of practicing social distancing and wearing masks. Thank you for your ongoing efforts, and please continue to keep up the good work!”
And in our panel a photo of the former Reflections guest house now the new digs of the Big Dick’s Halfway House courtesy Daniel Nardicio now open in the Pines.
Civic: in our panel one fundraiser and one clean up event
Outdoor dining to begin in the Grove as in the Pines circa next Wednesday. In our graphic panel see an advance notice from Cherry’s on their plans.

Sweet Licks now selling ice cream:
“The time has finally come…. Friday, June 5th at 12:00 we will be open for ice cream! 🥳

Community action: Demo
As per CGCA:
“I am pleased to tell you that a Solidarity March is being organized by Keith Goudeau and Jenn Yarosh for this Saturday, June 6. The gather time is 1:45 pm in front of the Community House and Firehouse. Keith will give some quick instructions and we will start moving at 2 pm.
March route: East on Bayview, turn on Doctors, west on Lewis, turn on Main into the center of town. There we will have a moment of silence and then march to the end of the dock. Maybe another moment of silence or a prayer at the end.
Please be sure to wear a mask. The end time is 3 pm.
There is also a March later in the day on Saturday in Ocean Bay Park and Ocean Beach.
We are alerting the police and asking for presence and alerting the ferry company. Since this will be on Facebook, we need to be on the alert for agitators that may want to come to create a disturbance. Doubtful, but better safe than sorry.”
And in our panel today there is also a march in Sayville promoted with a graphic Saturday for all to attend if they wish.
Our last comment: as always staff safe wear a mask, respect social distancing rules. Our state has made great progress dealing with the COVID 19 virus. There is still a way to go.
From the Fire Island Pines Historical Preservation Society…

It’s the start of the Memorial day weekend although this holiday period will not see any bars open except for drink pick up, and there will be no dances as clubs remain closed. Cherry’s does have an online performance event this weekend of note.
